To: All Heroes Of Light
If I haven't introduced myself before, my name is Ryoji Kaji, and I guess you could say I'm taking a survey of sorts. I know we're all trying to figure out how we're getting here, not to mention, how we suddenly have a lot of skills that we didn't have before. Or, at least, that's what I'm doing, don't know about everyone else. But I found it odd that I've never fired a bow and arrow in my life, and now I'm an expert. I want to know why. I think a few of you do, too.
Now, I'm not noticing anything missing, myself, but some people I've been talking to have. People who could shoot guns don't have that skill any more. I've met some people who can suddenly cast magic when they couldn't before. Can anyone suddenly not cast magic?
I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone find that they can't do something any more that they used to be able to, back in their home worlds? And, if you feel like sharing, do you still remember everything that you used to know about it? Is it just skill that's missing, or is it knowledge, too? Especially anybody from a technologically advanced world, any home that is vastly different than this one, I'd really like to hear from you.
Once I've established some kind of a pattern, I'd be glad to share my findings.

Back home, I used to be able to fight physically and cast magic but here I can't do that. Instead, I have two jobs: one that allows me to see opponent's weaknesses and strengths, immunities and so forth with the other that is a strict hand to hand combatant. While both jobs I have done were something that I am familiar with back home, it makes living with just one or the other challenging.
I do have my memories as a monk from home and a scholar of the same, though I am left with the conundrum of picking only one at a time, if this makes any sense to you.

Nice to meet you, Baralai, and I guess I have some follow-up questions. You used to be able to cast magic, but similar to your other memories from home, do you still remember how, but it just doesn't work here?
Also, are there any other skills that you find you're suddenly bad at? Things not related to combat? For example, I still know how to cook, even though all the food here is different than back home. Haven't managed to give myself food poisoning yet.

I don't mind answering them. I remember how, but the spells simply don't work. As far as my physical skill is concerned, I can do the movements but the balance and power are substantially weakened as if my body had no conditioning at all. I never learned to cook so I cannot offer any explanation to the effect, but it sounds as if part of our memory has been simply locked away.
To give you an example of how this may work, if I may, in my world, memories are important. They take the form of pyreflies after our bodies die. These pyreflies are our memories, or fragments thereof, that float and give meaning to our existence.
In the Farplane, we can shape these pyreflies to bring about our loved ones into form though they cannot speak. It's similar to how our powers work. We must have a key, in a manner of speaking, to unlock those abilities and memories to give our actions meaning.
Currently, I'm researching the machination here.

Why don't you read a book or something instead of asking all these questions! Or I don't know figure it out yourself.
I've always been awesome thank you very much.

I wasn't aware that we Heroes were in the presence of royalty! My most sincere apologies for addressing you in such a crude manner. If you have, in fact, always been so awesome, then you've already figured out why our abilities seem to just come and go at the whims of the people who brought us here. Or, if, in fact, that awesomeness could get taken away at any time just by changing an arbitrary 'Job' system.
Please, feel free to enlighten the rest of us, Princess.

Also my titles have been earned!
What have you earned?

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I must admit my curiosity in your subject of study. I arrived here just recently, and did not receive a crystal, as I have learned is considered normal.
I have noticed no new skills or abilities. As far as I can tell, my skill with a blade has not decreased. I was told in my youth that I had the potential to study magicks, but I chose not to pursue that path. I am uncertain as to whether that potential remains within me here.
I would be thankful if you would share your findings with me when you are able. In my world, I encountered crystals that granted tremendous power to their wielders, but at the cost of their humanity. I pray these crystals are more benevolent in nature.

I will definitely be sharing my findings with everyone, but what you had to say next is very troubling. These crystals from your world, would you be able to recognize another one if you saw it?

The Stones of which I speak can differ in appearance, but I believe I could recognize one of their type, by aura if not by sight. I have witnessed their use for noble purposes, so they are not purely evil. However, they provide great power, and power easily used is also easily misused.
I will keep a sharp lookout for crystals, and if I find something that resembles the Zodiac Stones, I will endeavor to inform you.
All luck to you in your studies.

I haven't lost any of my skills with guns and while this place is a bit weird without having any internet, there's still the whole moogle thing we can use. I've haven't forgotten anything either about home except why I woke up with a furry friend that wants to sleep wrapped up in my jacket.

I consider it my job to ask questions, that's what I was good at back home, and I don't seem to have gotten any worse at it.
You come from modern-day Japan, then, if you have Internet? What year, approximately?
Also, for some fun, try deliberately speaking Japanese to people. I didn't even notice at first that something seems to be translating everything we're saying, everyone can understand each other. The script, on the other hand, I think doesn't translate. That might be my next test.

That kind of job would have gotten you killed where I come from. Unless you've got protection to back you up.
I'm not really from Japan, though I am Japanese. It was 2035 when I got pulled.
I have. You still retain an accent though; most of the people seem to think I come from the east some where.

Last I knew, it was the year 2015 for me. Somehow I doubt we come from the same place, then. I honestly don't know if we were going to make it to 2035.
Well, since there are no computers around to test out potential losses of other skills, I'm not sure where to go from here. From what I'm hearing from other people, it seems to be very specifically a loss of skill, not knowledge. You remember everything about shooting a gun, but if you have one in your hand, it's like the muscle memory is all gone.
I want to know how they did it to us.
-Kaji
no subject
Probably not unless you came from Mallepa.
That's not something I want to test out considering there's hardly any place around here that can sell me bullets. From what I've heard, the crystals are suppose to keep our bodies together and the Jobs are how we do things. If we don't have a Job, then we don't do it. Kind of like getting trained into doing something, but with this world's physics it's a bit crazier. Muscle memory comes with the Jobs not the other way around, although if you get a Job close to what you're use to, then you have extra skills.
I've got the feeling that it's none of the people here who did it.

I have also found myself capable of sacrificing my own vitality to empower my blade, that is a talent I'd not possessed before coming here.

I was certainly not aware of others learning abilities they had no experience in! Back home, I was a bit of a researcher and inventor, and the Jobs given to me improved those skills. I only assumed that we were given ones that were related to our strengths back home.
Have you spoken to someone with no magical abilities that suddenly gained them when they arrived?

People actually shoot bullets here, too. Like lead bullets or whatever they're made out of. No laser pistols at all. Probably a good thing that I can't shoot straight anymore - I've got nowhere to get them charged or fixed now.
This place is weird.

Marshall:
Where have you seen robots? Well, other than your own horse. That definitely seems out of place for here.
Machines that run on magic? Now this is just getting strange. Excuse me if I'm not just going to buy the "a wizard did it" explanation. Even if it is "magic," there has to be come kind of underlying procedures, rules, something that we'd call science?
Also, if we're complaining, the complete lack of smokes around here is getting critical. It bothers me more that it's not bothering me. No nicotine withdrawal. Do they have that much control over us?

I decided to pop the head on mine, and it activated. Eyes turned blue. Next thing we know, the other five step forward, knee down with their heads lowered, and mine hits a button that made blades fall from the ceiling and lop all their heads clean off. Kind of freaky. And probably some sort of stupid, heavy-handed metaphor, considering there was a note attached to mine asking if we ever wondered what a hero of Light is.
The notes were from someone called Kalki. Whoever they are, I think they made the models. But what I want to know is, how did they know about the folks from Mars? They say they brought us here at random, but there they were, totally accurate.
We found the folks who broke in, and one fought us. He had some kind of big magic robot armor he was sitting it, that fired at us. Magitek armor, I think it's called.
I realize this kind of got off topic, but I figure this sort of stuff is important to the whole weird situation.

I have found that I am without certain abilities I possessed back home. I've tried to use them, but to no avail. I guess my abilities were a type of magic and now I find I cannot use them. I've pretty much found for me to be only the skill that doesn't seem to work, not the knowledge of it all.

Have you tried speaking to the other people here about their magic, or about the magic that can be cast here? I have an odd theory that if our abilities from 'home,' for lack of a better term, would be incongruent with how things work here, then maybe they wouldn't fit into this 'job' system.
I still want to find out more about how they can just change our level of skills at things at will, but I have no good ideas yet.
Thank you for contacting me,

For my part, the Jobs that I have been primarily assigned work well enough together for me not to have had to adjust my combat style too much. However, for whatever reason, I find my ability with them are somewhat lacking in comparison to how it was before. Not through a lack of knowledge at all,;all my forms still apply as do the techniques used with them.
However there is a notable exception. Despite that I arrived with Materia, they are now useless. Despite the fact I can clearly remember how to cast magic with them. Whether this is due to a lack of a magical Job, or some other consequence entirely, is debatable.

I didn't have magic or skills like these at home. I do remember techniques and strategies that I have seen taught in my fathers school. These have helped me with my own fighting here.
I believe that even if the magic or skills have changed people still retain what they know. If you find anything though please let me know.

I appreciate your effort in this endeavor. If I can help in any way apart from giving you what information you ask for, do let me know.
In Ivalice I am able to cast much more magick than I can here in Crystallis. My access to the Arcane, Green, and Time magicks has been cut off completely and I no longer have access to the majority of my White and Black magicks. My pacts with the Espers of legend and the Glyphs of the Beast also seem to have been severed. I cannot say how much of this interference is caused by the lack of Mist in Crystallis, or the very nature of being on a different world or in a different dimension, or even if it is caused specifically by the jobs we must equip. 'Tis possible that the job crystals could be interfering with whatever connection we may otherwise keep to our homelands - there are too many unknowns and I haven't the knowledge base yet to say for sure.
I am expert marksman and archer, and proficient in many weapon styles including the martial arts. I do not feel that any knowledge of these skills has been taken from me, though I do feel a change in constitution, as it were, that I can surmise is caused by my equipped jobs. I do not see why I would not still be able to fire a gun or shoot an arrow, however I am reluctant to engage in melee combat due to this change in constitution caused by my current status as a summoner.
Do feel free to ask further questions should you need clarification.
Best,
Lady Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca

Then again, I was only beginning my training back home. I can't really say if I lost any skill or not.

When it comes to powers, mine are gone. I guess they wouldn't get along well with the powers from these jobs. Still, I feel it's rather backwards that we can't keep our powers. I would think the more expertise we possess, the faster we could finish our mission. Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk, I suppose.
Back home, I got trained in many melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat, but I did notice I became more adept in using a spear now but not so much with hand-to-hand since that's normally how I'd fight. Also I wasn't exactly a magic caster back there either but I've yet to try the magic orientated jobs.
