I don't really know much about what his daily routine was like back home. Zack didn't know much either when I asked him. He's always been pretty private. He probably didn't need to work out as much as you're saying he is but I wouldn't be surprised if he did anyway.
But a First Class could do a lot more than a normal person could. He may not know what his own limits are? I don't know.
But maybe he needs something else to live for. Something to take his mind off of what's been left behind in Gaia.
