The Rogue Reaper

Everyone,

I've received troubling reports of a particular spirit that has begun to appear in several locations -- not only in Aqures Ixen, but Balicea as well, and many smaller villages in the countryside. Reports indicate that this spirit resembles an abnormally large skeleton garbed in black, carrying a scythe. It is believed to be a Reaper, and it is harvesting the souls of the living.

This is what troubles me. I myself am a Soul Reaper in the world I came from, and for a reaper to attack the living is unthinkable. It is a gross perversion of a reaper's duties, and I cannot begin to imagine what has caused this reaper to behave in such a disturbing manner. It cannot be overlooked.

Whether it is killing of its own volition, or driven to do so by another, I cannot say. And I cannot investigate this matter alone and hope to gain consequential results. Time is not a luxury we can spare.

I ask a favor of those who are willing -- find this reaper. At this moment, that is all we must do. Find out where it is. Speak to those who have witnessed its appearance. Gather any clues you possibly can, and report to me.

It is imperative that you do not fight this Reaper, especially if you are alone.

Once we know where it is, I will alert all interested parties and we will confront it as a whole team. I will not rest until we find the cause of this madness.

Please direct all questions and information to me. If you wish to join this team, notify me directly, and I will distribute all the information gathered as it comes in.

Dear Rukia,

Those who live here can't fight these things. We don't have the same jobs that you do and I know it's probably selfish of me saying so but please find a way to stop this. The people here don't deserve this after everything that's happened. They've been seeing the ghosts of their loved ones, friends and family. Haven't they suffered enough?

There has to be a cause. Ghosts like this don't just show up. It wasn't like this before now...

Do not fear. Your request is far from selfish, for we were summoned to this world to render you our assistance. Never be afraid to ask for help, should you need it.

In the meantime, know that this is my top priority. I will not unrest until the wandering souls of this place are able to know peace. We are in agreement; the activity is far too unusual to ever be considered natural. I intend to find the source, and stop it.

(My mistress was out when they handed out self-preservation instincts and picks fights with terrifying things and people. Don't tell her that it will kill her if she just waltzes in; you'll only encourage her to do something stupid and need someone to bring her crystalized body back to the hospital.

[Rukia stares at this letter. Does it...even dignify a reply? Is someone just messing with her? It's not funny. The Moogle at least seems to understand a little better. She coughs against her hand. How can she put this diplomatically...]

It is folly to rush toward an enemy we know nothing about. We do not know its capabilities, its reasons for acting against its nature, nor its location. To charge against it blindly would be akin to leaping head first into a lion's mouth. I advise you to exercise wisdom, as I have no wish to see any harm befall you.

[Reading Rukia's response to his missive have D a faint tug along the corners of his lips but he caught himself before it spread. He was making friends here. Odd. Still, he couldn't deny how comfortable he was beginning to feel in Crystallis.

Folding the letter, D slipped it in a pocket and went to walk the streets. The best way to learn information was to put himself in the heart of the situation.

That was how D always operated.]

I didn't hear about it until now, but I'll be careful. I'll ask around and see if anyone knows anything too. You think it's really that strong?

At this point, I know very little to give any kind of credible guess as to its strength and capabilities. For all I know, there could be several reapers, all bearing the same appearance. Gathering information is key at this point.

Whatever help I can offer you, let me know. I'm going to try out the new job that's been offered but I've also been sitting on the Vampire job for a while now. I've been told they may be able to combine into a potent combination. Maybe its powers will be able to help here.

Also I'm not wearing a dress again. No matter what bet I lose.

You have my thanks. I will keep you updated on my findings. I've been using the ghostbuster job since my return from Esdham, and have found it to be enormously effective against spirits.

As for wearing a dress, I have no further expectations, for you exceeded them all. I applaud you.

I would be most grateful for your assistance. It is my hope to lighten your workload by putting a stop to the Reaper's killings. Have you received any reports on the matter from witnesses? Is there any information about the victims, and why they may have been targeted? Anything you have may serve as a clue to discovering the Reaper's motivations.

Perhaps it will honestly, considering there are people who cannot defend themselves and these kinds of things are rather creepy don't you think?

I have not in its entirety but I have seen some glimpses of the creature myself. However, I did not attempt to engage out of safety. So, arranging a group seems viable at this point. I'm afraid I am not that huge of a help at the moment.

Yes, that is why it is crucial that we gather information, in order to formulate such a plan. We must know what it is capable of doing, and where it is likely to appear. The more we know about its patterns and habits, the more prepared we shall be to face it.
